Orkney Food and Drink Awards 2016 WINNER - Best New Product
The Island Smokery has been producing smoked mature Orkney cheddar for over ten years and recently moved a new Stromness factory to meet the rapidly growing demand for our range.
We currently offer three varieties of smoked Orkney cheddar – Light, Dark and Smokey Red. We also produce speciality flavoured smoked cheese including red onion, garlic and chilli. All of the cheddar we smoke is made in the islands by the Orkney Cheese Company, using fresh milk from local dairy herds. We also smoke over 10,000 garlic bulbs every month.
We also supply Orkney butter, smoked garlic butter and garlic aioli.
Our smoking process uses only high quality wood supplied by craftsman Eoin Leonard, from Stromness based Celtic drum makers, Belgarth Bodhrans. We take all of Eoin’s offcuts and unwanted wood, which reduces his waste and avoids the need for us to transport suitable wood into Orkney.
We supply to customers throughout the UK - from small delicatessens and wholesalers, to major supermarket chains Aldi and Tesco. With our newly expanded factory allowing us to smoke to 300kg of product a day, we’re looking forward to exploring new markets and building on our success to date.
The Island Smokery was shortlisted for the Business Growth Award at the 2014 Highlands & Islands Food Awards.
