Orkney Cheese

Award-winning cheddar cheese

Our multi-award winning Orkney Cheddar, revered by top chefs and cheese lovers alike, is crafted with only fresh, locally produced milk, using a unique and traditional dry-stir method.

Typically matured for 10 to 18 months to create a variety of medium, mature and extra mature flavours, our firm and dense-bodied cheddar is characterised by its rounded taste and savoury, nutty notes.

Although times have moved on since the humble beginnings of our cheese back in 1946 - back then it was a post-war surplus of milk that prompted the creation of a local cheese factory - Orkney Cheddar remains almost wholly owned as a cooperative by the farmers of Orkney. They oversee the creamery and the entire process - from the rearing of the dairy cows, right through to creation of the final product – before handing over to a distributor who ensures our cheddar reaches customers around the world in the same condition it left the islands.

Orkney Cheddar enjoys European Protected Geographical Indication status, assuring consumers they are buying a genuine, high-quality product from the islands.

At the 2014 Royal Highland Show, Orkney Cheese were delighted at the achievement of winning a gold award in both the mild & mature cheddar categories and receiving the prestigious 'Best Cheddar Cheese Exhibit Produced in Scotland' award for their mature white cheddar'
