There is now just one week to go before four of Orkney’s finest amateur cooks test their skills on stage in front of a live audience.
The 2017 Orkney Amateur Master Chef event will see the talented contestants use local produce to create delicious menus and try to impress the judges.
In the build-up we’re introducing you to all the entrants. Next up is local lad Aaron Moar.
NAME: Aaron Moar
MASTER CHEF 2017 MENU: Starter – Scapa Prawn and Crab with boozy mayonnaise; Main – Orkney Steak with cheese mousse and salsa; Dessert – Honey rhubarb and coffee crumble.
WHY DID YOU ENTER: My girlfriend entered me! It’s not something I’d have ever considered doing myself, but when I was selected I just thought it was an opportunity I’d never have again, so why not!
HOW ARE YOU PREPARING: I’d like to say with plenty of practice, but knowing me I’ll end up winging it slightly on the night!
HOW EXPERIENCED IN THE KITCHEN ARE YOU: Just the usual domestic experience. I just enjoy using a variety of ingredients and different flavours.
FAVOURITE DISH: A chorizo, mushroom and celery pasta.
FAVOURITE INGREDIENTS: Probably fresh basil.
GUILTY PLEASURE: Fancy cheese on toast!
ANY KITCHEN DISASTERS: Not directly food-related, but I was once doing the dishes and cooking at the same time, and accidently squirted the fairy liquid into the hot frying pan rather than the sink!
SECRET KITCHEN TALENT: Making an incredible mess whilst cooking even the simplest of dishes.
The 2017 Orkney Amateur Master Chef competition, sponsored by NorthLink Ferries and Jewson, will be held in the Orkney Theatre on Wednesday 27th September – tickets are available from Argos in Kirkwall.
