The knives are out for four Orkney ‘celebrities’ who’ve agreed to take part in a hotly contested cookery contest in a bid to claim the title of local Master Chef.
Organisers, Orkney Food and Drink (OFD), are keeping the lid on the names of the brave quartet of well-known islanders who’ve agreed to put their recipes and reputations on the line.
Edgar Balfour, project manager for OFD, said: “Our biennial amateur and professional Orkney Master Chef contests have proved really popular over the years, but we thought we’d do something a little different this time around.
“The amateur chefs who’ve sportingly entered the event are all very well known locally – some have even appeared on TV – but Orkney Master Chef is likely to prove the high point in their careers. They’re already sweating a bit about the forthcoming cook off, and they’ll likely be feeling the heat on the night too, but it’s all for fun and should prove to be an entertaining spectacle for the public too.”
The Orkney celebs will have to prepare a hopefully stunning three-course meal using local produce as much as possible, with their culinary creations sampled by a panel of hard-to-impress OFD judges.
Edgar added: “Will they get a good-natured roasting over the standard of their cooking? Possibly. Will entering this event catapult them into new careers as chefs? Unlikely. What we can guarantee is, the contest will show the public another side to some of our more famous local residents. It might be a side covered in flour and sweat, but it’ll be an unforgettable night.”
Seumas Campbell, Serco’s customer service director at NorthLink Ferries, commented: “We are very excited and proud to once again be sponsoring this year’s contest. It’s set to be another exciting competition and we would like to wish all of the local celebrities the best of luck.”
