Humes is the result of owner Ian Hume’s, long-time hobby of smoking fish and cheese – a process which he learnt from his father.
A northern isles boy by birth, Ian has been a deep sea trawlerman for almost all his working life and has a great love of the sea and its harvest - and also a passion for celebrating and retaining many of the traditional preserving methods and recipes of his childhood – but with a modern twist!
Assisting him in this venture is his wife Anthea who shares his love of their unique community – and also enjoys helping with quality and new product taste testing – a tough job, but someone has to do it!
Both Ian and Anthea believe that if a job’s worth doing – it’s worth doing well and their aim is to supply products which display their principles of quality, traceability and producer approachability.
Current smoked products include; Mussels; Orkney Salmon and Orkney Cheddar Cheese, all of which are oak smoked at Humes production base ‘The SmokeShack,’ located at their home in Kirkwall.Humes products can currently be found in local shops both on the Orkney mainland and in some of the outer isles.
