Over 6,000 nominations have been made for the 2017/2018 Orkney Food and Drink Awards, with event organisers urging anyone still to vote to get their entries in before the 31 August deadline.
Winners of the biennial awards - organised by Orkney Food and Drink (OFD) and sponsored by NorthLink Ferries – will be announced at a special gala event in Kirkwall Grammar School on 13 October.
Twelve award categories cover everything from the best bar and takeaway meals, to the finest bakery, fish, drink and dairy products. Voters can also nominate their favourite café, tearoom, or local food retailer. A 13th award category, judged by the directors of OFD, covers outstanding performance by a local food and drink business.
“Nominations have been open since the spring of last year and the response has been tremendous,” said OFD chair, Callum MacInnes. “This year we’ll be judging the awards solely based on the nominations received, so the input of local folk and visitors to Orkney is crucial. This is a chance to give our incredibly talented and diverse food and drink businesses a well-deserved pat on the back and they very much appreciate the recognition.”
Seumas Campbell, Serco’s customer service director at NorthLink Ferries, commented: “We are very pleased to once again sponsor the awards which celebrate the very best of Orkney’s producers.
“We have always been very committed to supporting the islands’ food and drink industry and would urge the local community to help us recognise Orkney’s great talent.”
Anyone who would still like to vote can do so online at the Orkney Food and Drink website.
