Here you'll find details of all the activities and events involving OFD members.
Our next event is Scotland's Speciality Food Show in Glasgow's SEC from 20th to 22nd January
Great food and drink is part of everyday life in Orkney, but throughout the year many special events take place – from the Orkney Folk Festival and world-renowned St Magnus Festival and the Orkney Science Festival, to our busy local agricultural shows and farmers’ markets – with local produce always available to try or buy.
During the year OFD members also attend key trade shows throughout the country, including the Scotland’s Speciality Food Show and the Royal Highland Show, flying the flag for the Orkney brand and introducing their products to new customers.
All local activities carried out by Orkney Food & Drink are supported by our main sponsor NorthLink Ferries. With NorthLink Ferries, travelling to Orkney and Shetland is more convenient than ever before. Choose from up to three sailings a day from Scrabster (near Thurso) to Stromness in Orkney and nightly sailings from Aberdeen to Lerwick in Shetland – with four of these sailings going via Orkney’s capital, Kirkwall. www.northlinkferries.co.uk
Fine Food Show North
Based in Harrogate, the Fine Food Show North is a 2 day event held in March 2019 in the Yorkshire Event Centre. This event showcases products like high-technology food or beverage-related products etc. in the Food & Beverage industry.
The first two iterations of this event has been dominated by the Northern Isles - with Westray taking the 2015 win, and Sanday claiming top spot in 2017. In spring 2019 Orkney's parishes are again set to go head to head in a community wide home produce competition. "Homemade in the Parish", is becoming a regular biennial attraction and sees Parish teams from throughout the islands submit products across a wide range of categories - everything from jams, chutneys, shortbreads and cakes, to home brew, cheeses and savoury pies. There's also a special "Buns for Bairns" baking category for children under 12 and, of course, the Showstopper Cake!
Judges sample the produce blindly, before deciding on category winners. Members of the public also have the chance to taste the food, and vote on presentation.
Parishes have to enter at least nine of the 12 competition categories. Each table/parish will also be judged on presentation and their interpretation of the theme for the year (still to be announced). The Food and Drink Parish Cup will be awarded to the parish with the most points overall.
If you would like to get involved, just get together with others from your parish and enter a team by clicking the link below and complete the simple online application form. Orkney's annual festival celebrating the vibrant folk music scene in Orkney. Orkney Food & Drink Members set up tents on the Stromness Pierhead on Saturday offering delicious Orkney fayre to festival revellers
Scotland's premier agriculture show again welcomes Orkney Food & Drink to their foodhall in Scotland's Larder Live. Many of our members are attending and offering visitors prime Orkney produce to sample and buy.
This event is aimed specifically at the "Peedie Producers" in Orkney. We plan to have a range of stands in the car park area next to St Magnus Cathedral with the smaller members of Orkney Food & Drink exhibiting. Goods available to sample and buy. Names to be confirmed.
Once again Orkney Food & Drink members will populate the "Food Hall" within the Showpark on the biggest day of the West Mainland farming calendar. BBQ Burger Rolls, Crab Rolls, Crab Salad, Home Bakes, Cheeses, Ice-Cream etc. etc. Come along and see us - rain or shine.
Orkney County Show
Quite simply, the biggest day in the Orkney Calendar - bar none. Orkney Food & Drink will once again be there right next to the Main Ring with seat also available. It really IS worth joining the queues to get that special Orkney steak burger, crab roll, crab salad, cup of chowder, cheese, chutney, cake or chocolate - or even a peedie dram... or two!
Another event centred and focussed on our smaller members. A selection of top class Orkney Food & Drink products will be available to shoppers in Kirkwall on Saturday. Stalls are open from 12pm till 4.00pm. If you are looking for your lunch - try some quality Orkney fayre
Now firmly established as a favourite in the local food calendar, this biennial event is once again to be held in the Orkney Theatre in 2019. This year we are having a little "twist" on the format.... all will be revealed in time!
