Orkney food and drink heading for Glasgow

This weekend’s star-studded BBC Good Food Show in Glasgow is set to experience a taste of Orkney, with local gin, cheese and bakery goods all on the menu.

Three local food and drink businesses will showcase products at the event, being staged in the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre between 4 and 6 November.

The Orcadian contingent will share a platform with over 100 exhibitors from around the country and a host of celebrities, including chefs Tom Kitchin and Michael Roux Jr., Great British Bake Off judge, Paul Hollywood, and MasterChef judge, John Torode.

Pop-up restaurants, cookery demonstrations, book signings and product samplings are all included in the event, expected to attract thousands of visitors.

The Orkney firms attending the show - with the support of member organisation, Orkney Food and Drink - are The Orkney Bakery (Argo’s), The Island Smokery and Orkney Distilling, makers of Kirkjuvagr Gin.

Edgar Balfour, development manager for Orkney food, drink and crafts, said: “Orkney enjoys an excellent national and international reputation for food and drink, but we operate in a very competitive marketplace and should never rest on our laurels. It’s therefore essential that we continue to attend events like The BBC Good Food Show, which is one of the most important fixtures in the national food and drink calendar.

“It’s always an incredibly busy event, one that gives the firms attending a real boost in terms of their profile and sales. It’s also a great chance for us to tell people all about Orkney and everything we have to offer here, in addition to our fabulous food and drink.”

Stephen Kemp, managing director of Orkney Distilling, said: “This is our first show since bringing Kirkjuvagr Gin to the marketplace earlier this year and we’re really excited about attending. We’ve heard great things about the event and are very much looking forward to sharing our product with all the visitors and, hopefully, a few of the celebrities taking part!”

The following weekend will see Stockans Oatcakes fly the Orkney flag at the BBC Good Food Show London.
